Skin Removal
After a large weight loss it is common to have folds of loose skin left, which cannot be reduced with diet or exercise, only removed surgically. Skin removal surgery will leave extensive scarring in areas where the skin has been removed, but plastic surgeons will perform techniques to minimize scarring. The aesthetic results of the skin removal far outweighs the inconvenience of having a scar.
Skin removal is commonly performed on the face and body. Removing loose skin on the face may be performed with a facelift. Removing loose skin on the stomach may be performed with a tummy tuck. Other common skin removal surgeries include:
A Body lift (may also be called a 'Belt Lipectomy') is a procedure that involves the lifting of many areas of the body, and can include a lower body lift, buttock/thigh lift, tummy tuck and arm lift. The procedure removes excess skin, tissue and fat and the remaining skin is tightened, and is very common after a large weight loss or weight loss surgery.
An arm lift (also known as brachioplasty) is a procedure designed to reduce upper arm skin that hangs down ('batwing' arms). This results in a long scar running underneath the arm, from elbow to armpit.
A thigh lift is a procedure done to remove both excess skin around the thighs or to tighten extra skin on the thighs. Commonly an incision is made in the crease between the thigh and the pelvis and from this incision extra skin and fat are pulled upwards. The extra skin and fat can then be removed and the remainder closed, leaving a much tighter looking more youthful upper leg.
A buttock lift is performed through an incision that is above the buttocks through which the underlying tissue is undermined and lifted. Excess tissue is then discarded. This gives a more tighter appearance to the buttock area.
