Liposuction
Liposuction is a surgical procedure that involves the removal of fat from beneath the surface of the skin. It is designed to remove pockets of fat that have not responded to diet or exercise, so is not an effective method of weight loss but a good method of body contouring. Good candidates for this procedures are near their ideal weight and are active and healthy. It also helps to have good skin elasticity so that the skin shrinks to the reduced contour. Large volume liposuction is not commonly performed in Canada due to the risks involved.
There are various techniques used in liposuction surgery. Most popular are the tumescent technique, ultrasonic liposuction and power assisted liposuction (PAL). More recently laser liposuction has been introduced in Canada and considered by some surgeons to be a less invasive procedure and have the added benefits of skin tightening.
Most liposuction surgeries can be performed in a few hours under local anesthetic, and you will be home the same day. You will probably notice the results soon after surgery, but the true
improvement will not be evident until approximately 6 months, when all the swelling has subsided. The fat cells removed will not grow back, but it is important to follow a healthy diet and regular exercise as it is possible for the remaining cell to grow.
